Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has released what he describes as fresh evidence confirming his role in facilitating Peter Obi’s selection as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the 2019 presidential election.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Omokri published an email allegedly sent to him by Peter Obi on October 8, 2018, in which Obi submitted his résumé, reportedly at Atiku’s request. According to Omokri, Obi was officially announced as Atiku’s running mate just four days later, on October 12, 2018.
Omokri’s statement appears to be a direct response to criticism from supporters of Obi—especially members of the Obidient Movement—who have publicly questioned the authenticity of his claims.
“Dear Citizens of Nigeria,” Omokri wrote, “Please find attached an email sent to me by Peter Obi at 6:13 PM on Monday, October 8, 2018. Four days later, he was announced as Waziri Atiku Abubakar’s running mate. My only motive in publishing this evidence is to prove that I did not lie.”
He emphasized that he was compelled to publish the email after being called a liar by an Obi supporter during a podcast appearance. Omokri also dared Peter Obi to publicly deny the email’s authenticity, warning that more “damning evidence” could be released if necessary.
“If this email is fake or AI-generated, I challenge Mr. Obi to deny it. I will not hesitate to release more if required, although I would prefer not to. One thing I am known for is keeping meticulous records,” he added.
Omokri had earlier claimed in a media interview that he played a key role in “packaging” Peter Obi as Atiku’s running mate in 2019, a statement which drew sharp criticism from Obi’s supporters.
As of the time of this report, neither Peter Obi nor his supporters in the Obidient Movement have issued a formal response to the newly released email.
It will be recalled that in the 2019 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar lost to then-incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.
