In a major political realignment, residents of Yashikira District which comprising the Gure/Gwassoro and Yashikira wards in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara North have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The decamping ceremony, held in Gure, drew delegates from villages across the district and reaffirmed a collective resolve to embrace the ADC as a viable political alternative. Organisers described the move as a strategic step towards securing a better political future for the region.
Notably, all PDP officials in the affected wards, including the Local Government Woman Leader and several key executives, have renounced their membership and pledged allegiance to the ADC.
Speaking during the event, the Chairman of Yashikira Ward, Alhaji Hussein Mayan, and his Gure/Gwassoro counterpart, Mallam Issa Barka, urged the new members to remain united and committed to the party’s ideals. They described the ADC as a grassroots-driven platform built on integrity, inclusiveness, and community development.
“This movement is not just about party politics; it’s about giving voice to minority groups in the state,” they said. “Baruten has long been marginalised, and aligning with the ADC presents a unique opportunity to assert our place and push for meaningful development.”
The mass defection represents a significant setback for the PDP in the Baruten axis and signals growing momentum for the ADC ahead of upcoming political contests in Kwara North.
