PDP NWC confirms Sam Anyanwu’s return as National Secretary

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, bringing an end to prolonged internal disagreements and leadership uncertainty.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum announced the decision, describing it as a step toward restoring unity and reinforcing adherence to the party’s constitution.

Anyanwu, who was elected National Secretary during the 2021 PDP National Convention, became a controversial figure in 2023 after clinching the party’s governorship ticket in Imo State. His emergence sparked debates within the party, with some members insisting that his new political ambition meant he could no longer retain his national office, citing constitutional provisions that bar party officials from holding office while contesting elections.

The situation led to internal power struggles, legal battles, and attempts by some factions to name an acting secretary in his place.

However, following the conclusion of the Imo governorship election where Anyanwu lost to incumbent APC Governor Hope Uzodinma, his supporters rallied for his reinstatement. After a period of consultations and legal reviews, the NWC has now formally affirmed his position.

This resolution is viewed as part of broader efforts to strengthen the PDP’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. It also signals the party’s intent to mend internal rifts and refocus on its role as the country’s main opposition platform.
