Nigerian students clinch victory in inaugural UK-Nigeria virtual debate competition

Students from St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, have emerged as overall winners of the first-ever UK-Nigeria Virtual Debate Championship.

The competition, held on Thursday, brought together students from both nations in a spirited intellectual exchange aimed at enhancing cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. Representing Nigeria were students from Britarch Schools and Sure Start School in Abuja, St. Augustine’s College in Jos, and St. John Vianney Science College in Anambra. On the UK side, participants included Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

The event was jointly organised by Bring-It-On Africa and Debate Mate UK.

In a congratulatory message delivered on Saturday in Awka, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, praised the victorious students for proudly showcasing the Anambra brand on an international stage. Dr. Soludo, who also founded the Healthy Living Initiative, described their success as a testament to the state’s commitment to educational excellence and human capital development.

“Our home continues to nurture exceptional talents who are making their mark globally,” she said. “This victory reflects Anambra’s deep-rooted belief in education as the foundation of our most cherished aspirations. The present administration understands this and is consistently investing in our future through quality education.”

She also extended her appreciation to the staff and management of St. John Vianney Science College for their dedication to students’ academic and personal growth.

“Thank you for guiding our students toward transformative learning experiences that will shape their futures,” she added.

The Anambra team comprised Chibueze Jennifer, Catherine Obiokafor, Benjamin Eneoli, and Valentine Onwuegbusi, with Mr. John Onuigbo serving as their guide throughout the competition.
