The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, has alleged that former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is already considering leaving the ADC coalition.
Obi, who contested the 2023 general elections under the Labour Party, recently joined other opposition figures in forming a coalition under the ADC to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 elections. However, just days after the coalition was launched, Obi declared his intention to run for president in 2027—while still maintaining his LP membership.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kachikwu claimed the coalition is being manipulated to serve the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. According to him, Obi and other aspirants are beginning to realise that the coalition is skewed in favour of Atiku.
“The whole ADC structure is being packaged for the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar,” Kachikwu said. “Peter Obi now understands that the coalition was never a true alliance. It was simply a platform designed to promote Atiku’s ambition. He’s already looking elsewhere.”
Kachikwu, who has consistently raised concerns over alleged attempts by prominent opposition figures to hijack the ADC, maintained that he will not allow the party to be used as a vehicle for Atiku’s political interests.
He emphasized that the 2027 elections must reflect the true will of the people, not the interests of political elites, and pledged to continue enlightening Nigerians about their rights and the importance of rejecting political manipulation.
