Peace has been restored in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State, following violent unrest on Monday morning that saw the NDLEA office attacked and an attempted assault on the Emir’s palace thwarted by security operatives.
The disturbance was reportedly triggered by recent security operations targeting drug trafficking in the area, which led to the arrest of several suspected drug dealers. Taking advantage of tensions in the community, protesters launched an early morning attack on the NDLEA office, setting fire to three vehicles and several motorcycles, releasing three detained suspects, and looting exhibits recovered during previous operations.
They also attempted to attack the Emir’s palace, accusing the traditional ruler of failing to intervene in the anti-drug crackdown.
In response, a high-powered government security delegation visited Lafiagi to assess the situation and restore calm. The team included the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi; Brigade Commander Brigadier General Ezra Barkins; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu.
The delegation was received by Edu Local Government Chairman Abdullahi Bello; Edu Development Officer, Alhaji Haruna Likpata; Commissioner for Youth Development, Shehu Ndanusa Usman; and Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, Bello Taoheed Abubakar.
Commenting on the incident, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu condemned the violence, describing it as an act of pure criminality.
“The unrest was fueled by the recent crackdown on drug dealers. Protesters took advantage of community anxiety to commit serious crimes—burning NDLEA property, freeing suspects, and attempting to attack the Emir’s palace,” Aliu explained.
He assured residents that normalcy has been restored through the swift deployment of military and police personnel. The delegation also visited the Emir’s palace and engaged local leaders on the need for peace and lawfulness.
“We appreciate Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his prompt response and decisive intervention. Additional security deployments have been made to prevent further escalation,” he added.
Aliu confirmed that no lives were lost during the incident and urged residents to remain law-abiding, warning against taking the law into their own hands.
