FILSU Embraces Digital Governance, Transiting parliamentary engagement into modern era

The Students’ Legislative Council (SLC) of the Federation of Iwoland Students’ Union (FILSU), National Headquarters, has commenced a sweeping digital transformation aimed at modernising students’ parliamentary administration.

Under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ademola Stephen Babalola, the Council has successfully transitioned key legislative processes to digital platforms, marking a significant milestone in the Union’s history. The recently concluded application and screening exercise for the Students’ Judicial Council (SJC) was conducted entirely online, utilising digital forms, electronic mail, automated scheduling tools and data analytics to ensure efficiency and transparency.

The move, according to the statement signed by House Press Committee Chairman Com Folorunsho Kehinde Oluwaseun and released by Secretary Lady Com Oniyide Aishat Ifeoluwa, reflects its commitment to modern governance, accountability and effective service delivery. By eliminating manual procedures, the SLC says it has reduced delays, improved record-keeping and enhanced accessibility for student participants across different locations.

As part of the ongoing reforms, the Council has also initiated the development of a centralised biodata database for all Honourable Members of the Students’ Legislative Council. The database, described as the first of its kind in the Union’s over 70-year history, is expected to serve as a secure repository for legislative records and official information. It will also facilitate the issuance of official identity cards, improve communication, support virtual engagements and strengthen long-term administrative planning.

In addition, the Council is considering a bill seeking to legalise virtual parliamentary sittings within FILSU. The proposed legislation, sponsored by the Speaker and co-sponsored by a member of the House, aims to promote inclusiveness by allowing members who are unable to attend physical sittings due to distance or other constraints to participate actively in legislative activities.

The SLC noted that the proposed reforms are designed to align FILSU’s parliamentary practices with global best standards while expanding participation and representation within the Union.

Reaffirming its mandate, the Students’ Legislative Council pledged to continue prioritising innovation, accountability and sustainable institutional development in the service of all Iwoland students.
