LAUTECH Final-Year Student Makes History, Emerges First Female INSU President

A final-year student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Aisha Balogun, has etched her name in history after emerging as the first female president of the Ilobu National Students’ Union (INSU) in Irepodun Local Government Area of Osun State.

Balogun, a 500-level Agricultural Economics student, emerged victorious at the recently concluded INSU election, ending a 34-year streak of male leadership in the union since its inception.

Findings by our Correspondent revealed that the newly elected president, popularly known among her peers as “Omo Balogun,” contested against a student of Mass Communication from Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, in what was described as a keenly contested and transparent election.

The election, which recorded impressive student turnout, was conducted under the supervision of the INSU Electoral Committee.

While announcing the results, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Olawale Abdulhamid, disclosed that Balogun polled 186 votes, with 24 ballots voided, while her opponent secured 157 votes, with 27 void votes, out of a total of 394 votes cast.

Observers attributed Balogun’s victory to her vast experience in student leadership and community service.

Prior to her emergence as president-elect, she had served the union in several key capacities, including Assistant Public Relations Officer, Welfare Director, and Vice President, positions in which she reportedly distinguished herself through commitment, inclusiveness, and effective leadership.

Her emergence has since been greeted with widespread celebrations among students and stakeholders in Ilobu, who described the development as a significant milestone for inclusive leadership and women’s participation in student governance.

Many supporters have expressed optimism that her administration will prioritize student welfare, unity, and the overall development of Ilobu indigenes across tertiary institutions in the country.
