Kwara Govt rolls out CNG vehicles to enhance affordable transport

The Kwara State Government has launched the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles as part of a broader initiative to provide residents with affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly transportation options.

The official flag-off ceremony, held at the Ministry of Transportation Headquarters in Ilorin, was presided over by the Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Lafia Aliyu Korasabi. He noted that the initiative is in line with the Federal Government’s policy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at easing the economic burden of transportation on Nigerians through a nationwide rollout.

Describing it as a pilot phase, Hon. Korasabi confirmed the immediate deployment of 20 CNG buses, a development he said reflects Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s commitment to improving the standard of living in the state through accessible and low-cost mobility solutions.

He urged transport unions to welcome the initiative, emphasizing that it is not a threat to existing transport services but rather a complementary effort designed to offer commuters more options and foster healthy competition.

The Commissioner outlined the initial coverage areas, including major cities like Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, and Niger State. Within Kwara, the CNG buses will serve routes across Lafiagi, Kaiama, Patigi, Baruten, Moro, and the Malete campus corridor.

Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, the Director of Personnel, Finance, and Supply at the Ministry, Mallam Tajudeen Onikoko, commended the Governor’s inclusive governance approach and called for peaceful cooperation between transport operators and the new CNG service.

State Coordinator of the CNG Station, Mr. Babatunde Gegele, disclosed that the facility is located at Odota in Ilorin. He explained that the scheme is designed to bridge the gap left by the now-defunct Kwara Express, assuring the public of safe, affordable, and consistent transportation. He also pledged to work with stakeholders and law enforcement to ensure full regulatory compliance.

Transport union leaders, including the Chairmen of the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Alh. AbdulRahman Olayinka Onikijipa; the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alh. AbdulRazaq Ariwoola; and the Association of Independent Transporters, Alh. AbdulGaniy Omoola Kasmag, welcomed the initiative. They praised its potential to transform the sector and reduce commuting challenges for residents, pledging their full support.

The event was attended by key government officials, directors from the Ministry of Transportation, senior aides to the Governor, and representatives of the Nigeria Police, DSS, NSCDC, and the Kwara Internal Revenue Service — all of whom expressed readiness to ensure the programme’s success.
