President Bola Tinubu on Sunday presided over the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking his final outing as Chairman of the regional bloc.
The session, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, was attended by 11 other West African leaders who arrived at the venue around 5:05 p.m. local time.
Tinubu assumed the chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority on July 9, 2023, following his election in Guinea-Bissau. He was re-elected for a second term on July 7, 2024, also in Abuja, and is now set to officially hand over leadership at the current summit.
During the closing of the 94th Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers on Friday, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, hinted at the impending leadership transition.
“As the agenda of the Summit we endorsed indicated, the election of a new Chair of Authority, this may be my last Council Session as the Chair of this Council,” Tuggar noted.
Reliable sources have confirmed that Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is set to succeed Tinubu as the next Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
