The palace of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has dismissed a viral video showing his recent encounter with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, in Abuja, describing it as edited and misleading.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, the footage circulating online does not accurately reflect the cordial interaction that took place between the two monarchs during the West Africa Economic Summit held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre on Saturday.
Olafare clarified that the Ooni was already seated in the VIP lounge when the Alaafin arrived. Rather than proceeding to his assigned seat, the Alaafin approached the Ooni to exchange warm greetings, after which both monarchs shared light conversation before the Alaafin took his seat.
“When they were invited into the main hall, the Ooni exited the VIP area first, followed closely by the Alaafin, and both were seated in their designated spots for the event attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Olafare explained.
He criticized the media handlers of the Alaafin, particularly a platform known as “Oyo Legacies,” for posting an edited version of the encounter that misrepresented the respectful exchange between the two traditional rulers.
“The video failed to reflect the true statesmanship and mutual respect displayed. The Alaafin conducted himself with grace and even requested a follow-up visit to the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife later this week,” the statement added.
Olafare emphasized the importance of responsible media representation, urging palace media teams to portray their principals in a manner that promotes dignity, peace, and unity.
