Kwara Government Alerts Residents on Imminent Heavy Rainfall, Thunderstorm

The Kwara State Government has issued an important weather advisory to inform the general public about a forecast of heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, expected to begin today, Wednesday, July 30, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

In response to this forecast, residents—particularly those living near riverbanks and in low-lying, flood-prone areas—are strongly advised to relocate to safer, higher ground without delay, in order to safeguard lives and property.

The government also urges the public to exercise caution during this period by minimizing movement, especially when rain appears imminent.

As a preventive safety measure, residents are encouraged to unplug electrical appliances before leaving their homes, to reduce the risk of power surges or damage due to lightning strikes.

To further mitigate the risk of flooding and ensure public safety, the state government has commenced dredging operations along the Asa River. Additionally, the Ministry of Environment is actively clearing drainage channels across Ilorin and other urban centres.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration remains committed to the safety, well-being, and prosperity of all Kwarans. Citizens are enjoined to support ongoing government efforts aimed at protecting lives and improving the living environment.
