Renowned Nollywood actor Timini Egbuson has revealed that he once came close to representing Nigeria on Big Brother Africa but was ultimately dropped, a disappointment he now considers a blessing in disguise.
Speaking during a recent episode of The Culture League podcast, Timini shared how the missed opportunity unexpectedly paved the way for his breakout acting role in MTV Shuga Naija, a project that launched his career and brought him into the limelight.
“I was supposed to be on Big Brother Africa some years ago. About five of us were shortlisted, and we had completed all the processes. We were even told to pack our bags and stay ready,” he recalled. “I had hired someone to manage my social media in anticipation, but I never got the final call. I think Tayo went that year, I’m not entirely sure. But that same year, I landed MTV Shuga, and that was what truly launched my career.”
Reflecting on the experience, Egbuson emphasized the importance of trusting the process and not being discouraged by setbacks.
“Sometimes, missed opportunities are actually blessings. I’ve seen people get roles I wanted, and I’ve also gotten roles others wished for. Looking back now, some of the things I thought I desperately wanted would have taken me off course. Where I am today is exactly where God meant for me to be.”
He concluded with a word of advice: “If I had gone on Big Brother, maybe the hype would have faded by now, or I might not have made it in the entertainment industry at all. That experience taught me to dust myself off and keep moving. It’s one of the hardest but most valuable lessons I’ve learned.”
