Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, Passes Away at 90

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90.

Sources close to the Olubadan-in-Council confirmed to PUNCH Online that the revered monarch died in the early hours of Monday, during ongoing celebrations marking both his 90th birthday and first anniversary on the throne.

Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne following the death of Oba Lekan Balogun, becoming the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland in July 2024.

A senior palace official, speaking under anonymity, said, “We have received word that the paramount ruler has passed on. He has joined his ancestors. However, a formal announcement is expected to be made by the Oyo State Government.”

Another palace source revealed that Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan and former Governor of Oyo State, who is next in line to ascend the throne, is currently outside the country.

“We are expecting the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, to return soon. He must have been informed of the development,” the source added.

The official mourning period and arrangements for the final rites are expected to be announced soon by the state authorities and the Olubadan-in-Council.
